In French, Or, ors, ores... accept different homonyms that should not be confused:

  • Or means gold (the metal)
  • Or is also written as a coordinating conjunction than means but, however. For example: Il le savait, or il l'a fait <=> He knew it, however he did it.).
  • Ors is the plural of or (the metal) = golds.
  • Hors expresses the notion of outside (outside of ...).
  • Ores is used exclusively in the adverbial phrase: d'ores et déjà (= already).

Not to be mistaken:

  • The conjunction or is written when it can be replaced by et (and). For example: Il devait venir or il n'est pas venu. => Il devait venir et il n'est pas venu.
  • We write hors when we can replace it with en dehors de. For example: L'hotel est construit hors de la ville. => L'hotel est construit en dehors de la ville.

For example:

La victime est hors de danger. <=> The victim is out of danger.

Hors de ma vue ! <=> Out of my sight!

Nous savons d'ores et déjà que notre équipe est qualifiée. <=> We already know that our team is qualified.

L'or est de plus en plus difficile à extraire. <=> Gold is getting harder and harder to mine.

Ce collier est en or. <=> This necklace is made of gold.

Il a reçu une convocation, or il ne s’est pas présenté. <=> He received a summons, but he didn't show up.

Les ors du roi ont été dérobés. <=> The king's gold< has been stolen.
