Question #6844   Submitted by Answiki on 10/10/2022 at 06:18:55 PM UTC

In French, should we put spaces before and after the quotation marks?

In French, quotation marks are always surrounded by spaces, unless the closing quotation mark is followed by punctuation (typically the period).

Note that the period is placed inside the quotation marks when the quotation forms a complete sentence introduced by a colon. It is placed outside when the text between quotation marks is not a quote and belongs to the sentence.

For example:

Il me lança : « Je vous aime. ».

Shakespeare a écrit : « Être ou ne pas être, telle est la question. ».

L'expression « moins pire », bien qu'employée n'est pas correcte.

Que veux-tu dire par « tu verras bien » ?
