Question #5574   Submitted by Answiki on 12/21/2021 at 07:36:43 PM UTC

In French, should we write « je vous tiendrai informé» , «informée» or « informés » ?

In the French sentence "Je vous tiens informé" (I will keep you informed), the past participle informé, used as an adjective, agrees with the word it qualifies (vous / you). The agreement therefore depends on the gender and number represented by vous

  • If you are addressing a man alone, you should write: je vous tiens informé.
  • If you are addressing a woman alone, you should write: je vous tiens informée.
  • If you are addressing several men, you should write: je vous tiens informés.
  • If you are addressing several women, you should write: je vous tiens informées.
  • If you are addressing a mixed group, it is appropriate to write: je vous tiens informés.

For example:

Monsieur, je vous tiendrai informé. <=> Sir, I will keep you informed.

Madame, je vous tiens informée. <=> Madam, I will keep you informed.

Messieurs, nous vous tenons informés. <=> Gentlemen, we will keep you informed.

Mesdames, je vous tiendrai informées. <=> Ladies, I will keep you informed.

Mesdames et messieurs, nous vous tiendrons informés. <=> Ladies and gentlemen, we will keep you informed.
