In French, should we write «Je vous joins» or «Je vous joint »?
« Joindre » is a third group verb. In the first person singular Je (I), it is conjugated with an -s: je joins. (I join).
For example:
Je joins mon C.V. <=> I attach my resume.
Je joins à cette demande le formulaire dûment complété. <=> I am enclosing my completed application form.
Je joins à la présente mon curriculum vitae. <=> I enclose my curriculum vitae.
Je vous joins ma lettre de motivation. <=> I am enclosing my cover letter.
When writing Je (te, lui, vous...) joins, the verb joindre always agrees with the subject Je and is spelled joins :
Je te joins.
Je lui joins.
Je vous joins.
Je leur joins.
Je te le joins.
Je le lui joins.
Je vous le joins.
Je le leur joins.
The fact that the complement is in the plural does not change the conjugation of the verb:
Je te les joins.
Je les lui joins.
Je vous les joins.
Je les leur joins.
For example:
Je te joins les dossiers. <=> I enclose the files to you.
Je vous joins quelques photos dans l'enveloppe. <=> I enclose some photos in the envelope.
Je leur joins les pièces complémentaires. <=> I am enclosing the additional documents.
The writing joints is the plural of the common noun joint:
J'ai changé tous les joints qui fuyaient. <=> I changed all the joints that were leaking.
