A clean room is a room that is "almost dust-free", generally for medical (operating room) or technological (microelectronics) purposes.

A clean room is a room in which the concentration of particles in the air (dust) is controlled, generally to reduce their number. These rooms are common in the field of microelectronics or medicine to avoid the introduction of foreign bodies (even microscopic) in electronic components or contaminants in biological organisms.

In practice, these rooms are built in the following way:

  • the pressure in the room is higher than the outside pressure, which limits the entry of particles that naturally follow the air flows (from inside to outside).
  • The air supply to the room is filtered by high efficiency filters.
  • The rooms are built and equipped with materials that do not generate contaminants, particles or chemical emanations.
  • The personnel working in this type of room wear equipment (gowns, masks, overshoes ...) that limit the dispersion of micro-organisms and particles (hair, fibers, dandruff ...).
  • As personnel are the main source of contamination in clean rooms, the robotization of these rooms limits the number of human interventions and therefore the introduction of contaminants.
