In Analytics, what is the difference between Direct, Referral, Organic and Social?

In web Analytics, visitors can reach a page from many sources :

  • Direct: visitor typed the URL directly, or clicked from bookmarks, email or document internal link;
  • Referral: visitor clicked on a link from other website;
  • Organic: link has been displayed in the results of a search engine;
  • Social: visitor clicked on a link from a social network.
