Question #5748   Submitted by Answiki on 01/22/2022 at 06:22:36 PM UTC

In French, what do you call a person who lives on an island?

Answer   Submitted by Answiki on 01/22/2022 at 06:24:50 PM UTC

In French, the inhabitants of an island are called the insulaires or îliens (more rare).

For example:

L'insulaire n'était pas retourné sur le continent depuis 40 ans. <=> The islander had not returned to the mainland in 40 years.

Les logements pour les insulaires sont insuffisants. <=> There is not enough accommodation for islanders.

Quelles sont les meilleures destinations insulaires ? <=> What are the best island destinations?

The name of the islanders depends on the island. For example, the inhabitants of the French Island l'île de Ré  are called "Rétais".
