Question #5982   Submitted by Answiki on 02/28/2022 at 06:07:00 PM UTC

In French, should we write « vas-y » or « va-y » in the imperative?

In French, the verbs of the 1st group (as well as souffrir, ouvrir, offrir, cueillir, aller et savoir) do not take the s in the second person singular, except when they are followed by en or y.

Examples:

Parle de ce problème à tes parents.<=> Parles-en à tes parents.

Cueille plus de fleurs <=> Cueilles-en plus.

Mange moins de haricots. <=> Manges-en moins.

Regarde attentivement les détails du contrat. <=> Regardes-y attentivement.

Ouvre six huîtres de plus <=> Ouvres-en six de plus.

Va dans la cours. <=> Vas-y !

Note that there is an exception: in the example with the verb aller, we will write: "Vas-y" but "Va y remettre y ce que tu as pris." because it is the y of the infinitive (of the verb remettre) and not a pronoun.
