Question #5985   Submitted by Answiki on 03/01/2022 at 07:54:52 PM UTC

In French, should we write « dite-moi » or « dites-moi » ?

Answer   Submitted by Answiki on 03/01/2022 at 07:57:10 PM UTC

In French, the imperative verb dire is written in the second person plural: dites, so the correct spelling is: dites-moi, dites-le-moi, dites-le-nous...

Note that in the locutions dites-moi or dites-le-moi, each word is connected by a hyphen.

For example:

Dites-moi si vous venez demain. <=> Tell me if you are coming tomorrow.

Dites-moi des mots d'amour. <=> Tell me some love words.

Dites-le-moi si vous avez cassé la vitre ! <=> Tell me if you broke the window!

Dès que vous avez la réponse, dites-le-nous. <=> As soon as you have the answer, tell us.
