Question #6319   Submitted by Answiki on 06/23/2022 at 09:43:41 AM UTC

Difference between static cooling, stirred cooling vs. ventilated cooling?

Answer   Submitted by Answiki on 06/23/2022 at 09:45:13 AM UTC

Refrigerators and freezers use three technologies:

  • Static cooling is the oldest technology. The inside of the refrigerator or freezer is cooled, but not ventilated: there are temperature disparities inside the appliance: the bottom is colder than the top because the hot air rises. In this type of appliance, the humidity present in the air ends up creating frost.
  • The stirred cooling consists in creating an air circulation inside the appliance in order to homogenize the temperature. This technology also allows for faster cooling of food when the temperature rises (introduction of a still hot food or opening of the door).
  • No-frost technology dries the air before introducing it into the appliance, thus avoiding the creation of frost. Ventilation provides the same benefits as stirred cooling, but the lack of moisture in the air tends to dry out the food. If this technology is the most efficient today, it requires storing food in airtight containers to avoid drying out.
