Question #6405   Submitted by Answiki on 07/24/2022 at 08:30:17 AM UTC

In French, should I write vice versa, vice-versa or vice et versa ?

Answer   Submitted by Answiki on 07/24/2022 at 08:32:32 AM UTC

The preferred spelling is: vice versa.

The expression vice versa is borrowed from two Latin words whose exact spelling is vice versa. Note, however, that the spelling vice-versa can be accepted, as it appears in some dictionaries. Both spellings vice versa or vice-versa are acceptable, but the preference is for vice versa. According to Ngram, the most common spelling used in the literature is vice versa.

On the other hand, you should never write « vice et versa ».

For example :

Tu peux convertir les centimètres en mètres et vice versa. <=> You can convert centimeters to meters and vice versa.

Des petits bouchons pour des doudous, et vice versa. <=> Small caps for cuddly toys, and vice versa.
