What is the difference between type A, AC, Hpi, Hi and Si RCDs?
AC differential circuit breakers only trip for leakage currents on the AC component. This excludes transient leakage related to capacitive loads, i.e. capacitor charging. AC circuit breakers are used to protect common electrical circuits such as lighting, household electrical outlets, some specialized electrical outlets (other than those protected by type A).
Type A differential circuit breakers offer protection against DC leakage in addition to AC protection. This DC component appears with some switched-mode power supplies that transform AC current into DC current. This component can disturb AC-type inter-differentials. It is used for the protection os specialized circuits such as of clothes washers, dryers, hotplates, etc.
Hpi, Hi or Si type earth leakage circuit breakers are high immunity circuit breakers that are designed to prevent accidental tripping. They are used to protect individual power supply points of appliances that cannot be affected by a power failure, such as freezer, alarm, computer.
