Question #6957   Submitted by Answiki on 10/18/2022 at 06:45:44 PM UTC

OSB 1, 2, 3 or 4, which one to choose?

Answer   Submitted by Answiki on 10/18/2022 at 06:48:34 PM UTC

Here are the differences between the different classes of OSB:

  • OSB 1: dry interior use, non-structural panel, multipurpose use.
  • OSB 2: dry interior use, structural panel allowing installation on joists.
  • OSB 3: interior or exterior use in humid environments, under shelter, structural panels.
  • OSB 4: interior or exterior use in humid environment, under shelter, structural panels with high stress.

For example:

  • To cover an existing floor, OSB 1 is sufficient.
  • To create a floor on joists in dry interior, OSB 2 is required.
  • For an interior partition (non-wet room): at least OSB 2.
  • To create an exterior construction under a shelter: at least OSB 3.
  • Flooring for a garden shed: at least OSB 3.
  • For bracing panels: OSB 3 or 4 in case of strong constraints.
