Bourbon Island is the old name of Reunion Island.
France took possession of the island in 1642. It is then renamed Bourbon Island (Île Bourdon), in homage to the royal family.
- 1500: the Portuguese colonists named it Santa Apolonia
- 1642: the French rename it Bourbon Island
- 1792: it becomes the island of Reunion
- 1806: it is renamed Bonaparte Island
- 1810: it became Boubon Island again
- 1848: the name Reunion Island is adopted until today
