Here are the different type of computer viruses:

  • File Infecting Viruses, also called file infectors, are viruses that copy their code onto executable programs such as .exe or .com files.
  • Macro Viruses are viruses written in a macro language, i.e. a programming language which is embedded inside a software application (typically word processors and spreadsheet applications such as Microsoft Word or Excel).
  • Boot Sector Viruses infect the partition table or boot sector or the of a disk generally from floppy disks, emails or USB sticks.
  • Trojan horses are disguised as normal programs that gain access to your computer's files and capture your private data.
  • Overwriting Viruses are a malicious software that overwrite or delete the original program code rendering the entire program useless.
  • Web Scripting Viruses are the malware that breaches your web browser's security and injects the malicious code on the webpage to take control of your browser and alter its settings.
  • Network Viruses spreads from computer to computer through network connections and replicate themselves through shared resources.
  • Browser Hijackers alter your browser setting to inject unwanted advertising or redirect your browser to other malicious websites.
  • Polymorphic Viruses mutate while keeping the original algorithm intact to evade anti-virus programs
  • Resident Viruses store themself on computer’s memory from which they infect any file running on the system.
  • Multipartite Viruses infects multiple parts of a system such as boot sectors, memory, executable files ...
