Question #7179   Submitted by Answiki on 09/21/2023 at 07:37:43 PM UTC

In French, should we write header « entête » or « en-tête »?

In French, It's correct to write entête and en-tête, but beware: the two homonyms don't have the same meaning:

  • un en-tête is a header that appears at the top of a document.
  • entête is the conjugation of the verb entêter (to stubborn).

For example:

Il s'entête, mais finira peut-être par réussir. <=> He stubbornly persists, but may eventually succeed.

Dans l'en-tête, il faut ajouter votre adresse. <=> Add your address to the header.

Dans l'en-tête des pages Web, on trouve des informations cachées. <=> Web page headers contain hidden information.

Note that the 1990 French spelling corrections accept the spelling entête for the word en-tête.
