How do I know if a phone is refurbished?

It is relatively difficult to tell if a phone is new or refurbished, especially since the means of verification vary by manufacturer. However, the following should give you an indication of the phone's condition:

Upon purchase:

  • On a new phone, the box is usually sealed with a warranty strip that should be perfectly seated. There should be no evidence of opening, tearing or overlapping. However, if the device is shipped from abroad, the customs services may have to open the package.
  • The phones are assembled in clean rooms and are packed without dust, traces, scratches or micro-scratches.
  • They are usually covered with protective films that are perfectly placed without folds or dust.
  • The phones are sometimes delivered with a label with the IMEI number or a serial number that allows to trigger the warranty or to consult the history of the phone on the manufacturer's website.
  • There are applications such as Phone Info, which can display certain data about the phone such as the number of times the battery has been recharged. If the battery has already been recharged, the phone is probably reconditioned.

When in doubt:

  • Take pictures when you open the box.
  • Look for videos corresponding to your model such as "Unboxing" on YouTube or Vimeo, and compare your packaging, seals, protective films to those in the video.

For iPhones:

In the phone's settings, look for the model number: Settings> General> About and scroll to the Model section. On newer iPhones such as iPhone 8 and later, the model number is also visible in the SIM card slot. The model number is a nine-digit number that tells you the status of the phone:

  • if the iPhone is new, the model number begins with the letter M ;
  • if the device is refurbished by the operator, the model number starts with the letter F;
  • if it is an Apple replacement device, the number starts with the letter N;
  • if the number starts with the letter P, it is a personalized device with engraving.
